EMPOWERING VETERAN ENTREPRENEURS
Military veterans represent a competitive advantage: They are a unique class of citizens whose experience, leadership ability, skill set, work ethic and character drive performance in the companies for which they work.
Our mission is to match military veterans with the execution resources that they need in order to acquire, scale, and operate businesses in the lower middle market.
Our guiding thesis is that military veterans create a significant, sustainable competitive advantage in business and particularly in young, dynamic companies. We believe that by empowering veterans to build businesses we will strengthen and support our local economy, create jobs and empower a unique class of citizens who want to create thriving commercial enterprises.
1836 was founded in 2017 by a group military veterans and successful business leaders. We saw that the members of Houston’s veteran community had great entrepreneurial potential but that they needed resources: financial and otherwise in order to succeed. We founded 1836 to help meet these needs. We began by contributing non-dilutive capital to organizations within Houston that support veteran entrepreneurship; several of which are listed on our Partners page.
We believe that our greatest impact will come from leveraging our time, talent, and networks, to support veteran entrepreneurs. We are focused on identifying and accelerating veteran run companies. We will continue to raise and deploy philanthropic capital when we see opportunities to catalyze growth and change.
We work closely with entrepreneurs to connect them to our networks, provide hands on assistance, execution resources, guidance and technical skills as needed. Individual members of 1836 make direct investments into veteran run business.

The Greater Houston area is home to more than 300,000 military veterans, one of the largest concentrations in the nation. In the past 10 years, Houston has seen amazing growth in all of its sectors, from the workforce, to the neighborhoods, to the culture, to the schools. Time and time again, Houston has appeared at the top of many lists on best places to live, work, and grow in the United States. The goal is to establish an advisory board of Houston business leaders from a cross section of industries and to create a viable veteran entrepreneur program in the Greater Houston area by integrating a network that would reduce inefficiencies in the transition process, increasing the impact veterans have in our community, and making Houston the place of choice for veterans.
